A Round Up of News from the World of Economics
B&O 41:2 - UK Motor Industry, Rise of Service Economy, Shift in Global Economic Power
| Date: 27 Jul 2011 | Author: Greg Opie |
The Summer 2011 issue of Britain & Overseas is now available online. It is free to members, and costs £10 to download for non-members.
Highlights this quarter include:
The Rescue of British Leyland: Its Impact on Today's UK Motor Industry. Garel Rhys explains how the UK motor industry is set to continue growing over the next five years to well above the levels of the "golden age" of the 1960s and early 1970s. The government subsidy to British Leyland, while clearly excessive, had a beneficial long term impact that is still being felt today.
The Rise of the 'Service' Economy. Robert McGarvey points out that the service sector represents an increasingly big share in developed economies, and that while companies within the sector are more than contributing their fair share to GDP in these countries, there are some problems that need to be dealt with.
Also in the issue...
-A briefing on the talk given to the ERC by John Hawksworth covering the shift in global economic power by 2050.
-Responses from readers to the call for more entrepreneurship in the last issue of B&O.
-An extract from the Chairman's Daberiam Report on the shifting energy market.
-Plus the usual book reviews and notes.
